The braintrust at Warner Bros stalled for a sec on Monday morning. Green was supposed to mean go for the studio to start churning out superhero flicks like there is no tomorrow. But movie-goers forgot to light the lantern. In a summer movie season that was supposed to be the "summer to end all summers", we have only had one movie, Hangover Part 2, open to past $100 million. Everything else has been well stuck in the mud. What happened? Where are all the grosses?
In yet another DOA weekend, GREEN LANTERN slipped in at $53.2 million. This is the third under-performer for the month of June in a row. That's also about $25 million less than what Warners needed to give the green-light to its other superhero franchises (besides Batman & Superman). Green Lantern was different than other superhero movies this summer in that it didn't start internationally first. So the back end could redeem the film, but I am not holding my breath.
As Kermit the Frog once said, "It ain't easy being green!"
Coming in second was JJ Abrams SUPER 8 with $21.4 million. The movie will pass the $75 million mark today. On a budget of $50 million, the homage to Spielberg looks to be quite profitable. Who would have thought? JJ does have the Midas Touch no wonder he just fired his agent and plans to go rogue. Could Paramount put him in charge there?
Put a fork in Jim Carrey, the former king of funnymen is done. MR. POPPER'S PENGUINS crept in at $18.4 million. The flipper-fueled comedy was sitting in second place Saturday but took a nose dive Sunday.
X-MEN: FIRST CLASS ($3.4 million) and HANGOVER 2 ($3.2 million) round out the top five. X-Men past the $120 million mark and Hangover 2 officially became the biggest R-Rated comedy ever overseas.
It looks like a bumpy ride ahead for the box office. Can it recover? Well if Transformers and Harry Potter have anything to say about it, it will! Stay tuned!
Okay I am outta here! See you peeps, next week!
