Hello peeps!
We are back with another report from the wild and wacky world of box office showdowns.
THOR and his mighty hammer held off those rabid BRIDESMAIDS to remain the box office titan for a second straight weekend. Is it just me, or does that sound like a porn movie name? Thor and the rabid Bridesmaids.
THOR dropped almost 50 per cent in its second frame, but it was still able to hold back BRIDESMAIDS. THOR reigned with $34.7 million.
BRIDESMAIDS, the comedy from the mind of Saturday Night Live alum Kristen Wiig, surpassed estimates by pulling in almost $26.4 million. Box office estimators had thought that $18 million was a wise bet, but after previewing the movie over a month in advance, Universal knew otherwise. I thought the movie was flawed, with too many characters and an under realized plot. But audiences embraced the movie's flaws and it has generated good word of mouth. It will be interesting to see how far it drops this coming weekend.
Coming in third was FAST FIVE, which is rocketing to a half a billion dollars worldwide. The movie still pulled in almost $20.5 million to become the most successful of the franchise.
Coming in at number four was Paul Bettany's gigantic ego in the dreary PRIEST with nearly $15 million. The movie that cost $60 million so this could be another stinker for Bettany. Wait? Somebody spent $60 million on a Paul Bettany movie. Hey buddy, I gotta bridge that would be perfect for you. Call me!
Rounding up the top five was high-flyer RIO, which just flew past the $420 million worldwide mark. RIO now stands as the second biggest movie of 2011. How long it will hang on to its perch is another question.
NEXT WEEKEND
Watch for the real summer movies to return when Johnny Depp steers his mighty pirate ship into uncharted waters. This fourth in the franchise promises to forget the last two movies ever happened and get back to basics. (Making Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley walk the plank was a good start!)
OK, that's all for me! I am outta here, chat with ya later!
