IRON MAN director Jon Favreau referred to the Summer of 2011 as a bloodbath of blockbusters. It will see one of the fiercest competition in recent memory. Where most summers have one or maybe two comic book influenced movies, this summer has eight. Can you name them all?

Which movie will be this year's LAND OF THE LOST? Is there another DISTRICT 9 out there? Will we have any shocking upsets? Stay tuned, true believers!

    LAST WEEKEND

Over the weekend we saw a certain blonde haired warrior throwing his hammer around and sending the competition flying. THOR, based on the Marvel comic’s hero, hammered into theatres with almost $66 million dollars. THOR has already picked up over $176 million worldwide since it opened in Australia almost 3 weeks ago. THOR hasn't been a huge success because everywhere the flaxen blonde warrior stood he was being cut down by Vin Diesel and company.

FAST FIVE has become the bane of the Thunder God's existence and he hasn't had a chance to breathe. FAST FIVE stood its ground over the weekend and hauled in $32.4 million. The unlikeliest of franchises has spawned a fifth entry that will likely become the most profitable of the franchise. It needs $40 million to catch the fourth entry in the series and it is highly possible it could do that before it leaves theatres.

JUMPING THE BROOM's third spot debut was a big surprise. This little comedy sent Kate Hudson packing. The movie stole most of struggling Kate's counter-programming audience with a $15.2 million debut. The movie that cost just $6.6 million to produce has made more than doubled its budget.

Kate Hudson's latest attempt to get back her rom-com queen title, SOMETHING BORROWED should have borrowed a life preserver to ride these rough summer waves. The comedy did an excruciating belly-flop into the deep end and sunk like a stone. The movie took in almost $14 million in its opening weekend. That's less than half the movie's $35 million budget. Unfortunately for Kate, American comedies don't translate very well overseas. Her last modest hit was the horrendous BRIDE WARS but that was more than two years ago. Paging Cameron Crowe, can you please bring a defibrillator to aisle four and revive Kate Hudson's career? ALMOST FAMOUS 2 anyone?

In the fifth slot was RIO which just became the most profitable film of 2011 passing the $400 million mark overseas.  The little blue bird who could is still shocking box office analyzers.

    COMING SOON

Next week, it's the girls vs. guys as BRIDESMAIDS takes on PRIEST. It is quite possible that THOR could hold on to his mantle into the next weekend, but the buzz surrounding BRIDESMAIDS is that it could quite possibly be the female equivalent of THE HANGOVER. Universal Studios thinks so! We'll see!
